The Passion and Resurrection Narratives of the Gospels:
Reflecting on the Paschal Mystery
Winter 2023: March 9 – March 30
Spring 2023: April 13 – May 4
Each Palm Sunday we listen to the Passion of our Lord. This year we will hear the Passion story as told in Matthew’s gospel. On Good Friday, the Passion of Jesus as told in the gospel of John will be proclaimed. From Easter Sunday until Pentecost, we will hear stories about the resurrection of Jesus.
Because the story of the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus is so familiar to us, sometimes we listen to the gospel accounts without paying close attention. What if there is something there that God wants us to hear this year in a particular way – will we notice? Carefully and prayerfully reading the gospel stories of the passion, death, and resurrection of the Lord and discussing them with our fellow Christians is a way to gain new insights into the Paschal Mystery, the very heart of our faith.
This year you have the opportunity to take a deeper look at these gospel stories by joining St. Patrick’s Thursday Morning Scripture Group. We will reflect on the narratives of the Lord’s Passion found in all four gospels during a 4-week winter session that will begin March 9 and conclude March 30. After Easter, there will be a 4-week session during which we will read and reflect on the resurrection narratives of the four gospels. The spring session will begin April 13 and conclude May 4.
The Thursday Morning Scripture Group has been meeting at St. Patrick’s for more than 20 years and is led by parishioner Susan Carlson, who holds a Master of Divinity degree. The group’s approach to the Scriptures is to combine study, prayer, reflection, and discussion. The group meets from 9:30 until 11:00 a.m. on Thursday in the O’Gara Parish Activity Center. No previous Bible study experience is necessary – all are welcome!
In addition to the Bible, the group will use a commentary for both the winter and spring sessions written by Stephen J. Binz entitled The Passion and Resurrection Narratives of Jesus. The fee to participate is $20 which covers the cost of the commentary. To register for either or both the winter and spring sessions, please contact Susan Carlson at SMcCarlson@aol.com.
