"Catholic Morality"

Beginning September 23, 2008, St. Patrick’s will begin the first Echoes of Faith morning session “Catholic Morality.”  The evening session will begin October 28th.  At no time in history have we been so effectively manipulated by “the hidden persuaders.”  The media, advertising, and big business seem to conspire to make us do what “they” want and what will make money for them.  Should not the church, founded by Christ, the Son of God, have the right to be equally energetic?  Perhaps, the last time many of us sat down and really talked about foundations of the moral life, objective and subjective morality, the morality of the human actions, and conscience and God’s law is when we were taking instruction in CCD class as youth.  Here is an opportunity to revisit the topic as an adult.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church addresses the topic of morality in a section entitled “Life in Christ.”  That title summarizes well what morality is about.  Morality deals with understanding how to live as Christians.  We seek this understanding in and through Jesus, who describes himself as “the way, and the truth, and the life.”  (John 14:6)

The church does not have all the answers.  Some are clear and can be given with full authority of the word of God.  Sometimes the church, like a body, is growing in its own awareness of the right way.  And we are called upon, as members of the body, to contribute to the growth together.  Please consider joining our gathering as we explore Catholic Morality.
