The Christmas season has just concluded, and in our weekend liturgies the gospel stories about the adult Jesus are beginning to unfold.  We have heard about the baptism at the Jordan, and in coming weeks we will hear about the public ministry of Jesus and about His passion, death and Resurrection.  Precisely because of the Resurrection, these are not simply stories about someone who lived 2000 years ago.  They are stories that help us to know our Risen Jesus, who is real and alive and powerfully influencing our lives today.  At the mid-point of 2008 we will hear a story from St. Matthew's gospel in which Jesus puts a question to his disciples:  “Who do you say that I am?”  The Risen Jesus is posing that same question to each one of us:  “Who do you say that I am?”

This is the question we will explore at St. Patrick's during the 8-week Winter 2008 Session of our Thursday morning Scripture group.  We can all come up with some quick answers (see Matthew 16:16 for Peter's response), but do those quick answers really begin to respond to the question of who Jesus is for us?  The goal of our Winter Session is not so much to learn about Jesus as it is to come to know Jesus in a more personal way.  The Winter Session begins January 24 and ends March 13.  We will meet from 9:30 until 11:00 in the O'Gara Parish Activity Center.  A $15 fee payable at the first meeting covers the cost of all study materials. No previous Bible study experience is necessary - all are welcome!

Our study and reflection will be based on the Scriptures and on a commentary entitled The Names of Jesus by Father Stephen J. Binz.  We will also use this commentary during the Spring 2008 Session, “Go and Make Disciples,” when the Thursday morning Scripture group will continue to reflect on the person of Jesus and what it means to be a disciple of Jesus.  The Spring Session will begin after Easter and continue until May 22.
